Harvard Human Rights Working Group event: The World is Watching: Activists and Academics on the Uyghur Genocide

The Harvard Human Rights Working Group, part of the Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights (EMR), is organizing an event on the Uyghur genocide which will take place on Sunday, February 28th. The event will feature presentations from Professor Rian Thum of Loyola University (alum of IAAS), Dr. Darren Byler of the University of Colorado, and Rushan Abbas and Kamaltürk Yalqun, both of the Campaign for Uyghurs.

 

 

The World is Watching: Activists and Academics on the Uyghur Genocide

February 28, 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Eastern Time 

 

 

Join us to hear from activists and academics on the Uyghur genocide. Rushan Abbas, a prominent Uyghur American activist and the founder and Director of Campaign for Uyghurs, will be presenting an overview of the current crisis as well as personal stories of engaging in activism. Kamaltürk Yalqun will be sharing how the persecution has affected Uyghur intellectuals, including his father, Yalqun Rozi, a famous Uyghur scholar and literary critic. Dr. Darren Byler, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Colorado, will be sharing some of his research, including a discussion of surveillance and terror rhetoric. Dr. Rian Thum will be sharing his ethnographic research on China and Islam. Each panelist will be presenting individually, with a question and answer session at the end.
